Austrian Federal Chancellor from the Christian Social Party, removed from office by the Germans during the annexation of Austria in March 1938. He became Chancellor in 1934 after the assassination of Chancellor Dollfuss. Schuschnigg tried hard to prevent the German annexation of his country but the Nazi government in Germany compelled him to sign an agreement which allowed Hitler's troops to march into Austria. During the war Schuschnigg was imprisoned, and afterwards he moved to the USA, and became a professor of political science at St. Louis University. He died in 1977.
